James Ramsay is a retired professor of security studies and currently serves as an Honorary Professor of Security Studies at Macquarie University. Prior to his retirement, he was Head of the Department of Security Studies and Criminology (now the School of International Studies) at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
Before joining Macquarie University, Dr. Ramsay was the founding coordinator of the Homeland Security Program and the founding Chair of the Department of Security Studies at University of New Hampshire. Prior to his tenure at UNH, he served as the founding program director for one of the nation’s first degree programs in Homeland Security, as well as the founding Chair of the Department of Security Studies and International Affairs at ݮƵ.
Dr. Ramsay has more than 25 years of experience in public health, security studies and intelligence, emergency management, occupational safety, and environmental health education. Throughout his career, he has established multiple academic degree programs addressing issues of global significance and public service, including national, homeland, and global security; cybersecurity policy and risk management; intelligence analysis; and human security and resilience. He also established two Federal Centers of Academic Excellence at the University of New Hampshire: one designated by the NSA/DHS in cybersecurity defense education, and another designated by the ODNI in intelligence education.
In 2020, Dr. Ramsay received two national teaching awards: the inaugural David McIntyre Award for outstanding teaching and research in homeland security, presented by the Center for Homeland Security and Defense and the Tarrants Award as Outstanding Safety Educator from ASSP.
Dr. Ramsay serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and is a member of the editorial boards of Homeland Security Affairs and the Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism. His current research interests include climate security and national security strategic planning, as well as wicked problems in intelligence, including the emergence of public health intelligence. He is currently completing his fifth book, Critical Issues in Homeland Security (2nd ed.), to be published by Routledge. He continues to teach and lecture in the areas of strategic planning and decision-making, climate securityand human security and resilience.
