See detailed instructions for how to apply to ERLI. Students must finish high school before attending ERLI. They also need a high-beginning level of English. If you are not sure about your English level, please email erli@erau.edu.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) usually issues the Form I-20 within 10 days after you submit all required information correctly.
Your Form I-20 will be sent to your Embry-Riddle email. Other important information is also sent to this email, so it is very important to check your Embry-Riddle email every day.
All students must complete a Medical Report Form and show proof of required immunizations. These requirements are set by the University. If you have questions about health requirements or immunizations, please contact Embry-Riddle Health Services.
All international students must have health insurance. ERLI students are automatically charged for the student health insurance plan unless they complete the waiver process.
All students must fill out a Health Insurance Form in Campus Solutions to either enroll in the student health plan or start the waiver process. If you have questions about health insurance, contact Health Services.

Important: The application fee must be paid before your application can be processed. You do not need to pay your tuition deposit until after you receive your visa.
Students should wait until they receive their visa before making any travel plans.
After you receive your visa, please attend the pre-departure session for your campus (Daytona Beach or Prescott). This session will give you the most up-to-date information about:
- the closest airports
- transportation options
- temporary housing and hotel suggestions
- recommended arrival dates
- important steps to take before and after you travel
Your campus will also provide official links with detailed arrival information to help you plan your trip safely and correctly.
If you have questions before your pre-departure session, please contact the ERLI Office.
Students usually bring a few personal items from home, but most things can be purchased after you arrive in the United States.
If you plan to live on campus, you will need to buy your own towels, sheets, blankets and bathroom items.
If you plan to live off campus, you may also need to buy additional household items, including basic furniture.
Both campuses offer ways for students to get the supplies they need, either through nearby stores or online shopping. Campus-specific details will be provided during pre-departure.
When you arrive at ERLI:
- Let the ERLI Office know you have arrived.
- Take the placement test.
- Attend the ERLI orientation.
- Attend Immigration Orientation and complete international student check-in.
The ERLI placement test will put you at the correct level. You will be given your placement results at the ERLI Orientation.
Each level of ERLI classes is one semester in duration. You could be placed in the same level in all classes, or you could be placed in different levels. For example, a student may place in Level 2 for Reading, Writing and Grammar, but place in Level 3 for Listening and Speaking.
Once you have completed the highest level of each class, you will have completed the language proficiency requirement for Embry-Riddle and will not need to take any English language tests for admission to the university.
Students can also obtain a minimum score in an accepted English language test and complete their current ERLI semester with an ERLI GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Note: If you are on a full-time student visa and obtain the required score on an English proficiency test during any ERLI term, you cannot stop attending classes. Immigration rules require you to continue to be a full-time student.
If a student’s GPA is below 2.0, the student is placed on warning for the next semester.
If the student again earns below 2.0 during the warning semester, the student is then placed on probation.
If the student earns below 2.0 during the probation semester, the student will be dismissed from ERLI.
Example:
- Semester 1: GPA = 1.0 → student is placed on warning.
- Semester 2: GPA = 1.5 → student is placed on probation.
- Semester 3: GPA is below 2.0 → student is dismissed.
After a student has been on probation, they must earn a GPA of 2.0 or higher every semester to stay in ERLI.
ERLI students are not required to live on the Daytona Beach or Prescott campuses while attending ERLI. ERLI students who are interested in living on campus may apply, but housing is not guaranteed.
After ERLI students enter an undergraduate degree program, they must follow the regular Embry-Riddle housing rules. For example, most students are required to live on campus for two years, unless they qualify for an exemption based on age, transfer credits, or other university criteria.
Learn more about housing for ERLI students.
ERLI is an intensive English program, so students are expected to focus on their studies. If you are interested in working, you must first speak with the ERLI Office and an international student advisor. They will help you understand what types of work, if any, are allowed for your specific immigration status.
