Sustainable aviation is both an awareness of and a set of actions that address aviation’s impact on the environment. An increasing number of companies and organizations are embracing the concept of sustainability to ensure a cleaner, quieter, more resilient future for the aviation industry. Sustainability has become a top priority for many companies and organizations, and it is considered a strategic priority for the College of Aviation moving forward."

Dean Alan Stolzer

Objectives

The Daytona Beach College of Aviation seeks to prepare students to meet the growing demand for sustainability solutions within industry, government and society at large. To that effect, the College of Aviation has established two main objectives:

  • Incorporate sustainability-related content into our curriculum
  • Integrate sustainable practices into our operations

These collective actions will ensure the college is doing its part to prepare graduates for an increasingly environmentally conscious industry and is continuing its leadership role in transforming collegiate aviation education.

Aviation Sustainability Task Force

To achieve its aviation sustainability objectives, the College of Aviation has established an Aviation Sustainability Task Force. Members of the task force include aviation faculty, students and staff who have volunteered their time to make recommendations on how to best achieve the college’s aviation sustainability objectives involving its curriculum and operations.

Curriculum Initiatives

Task force curriculum initiatives include:
  • Conducting a survey of current course offerings to identify which courses already incorporate sustainability
  • Identifying gaps in curriculum and recommending new material
  • Identifying learning outcomes in aviation sustainability
  • Creating a Canvas Hub with resources for instructors looking to add sustainability topics to existing courses
  • Exploring the feasibility of establishing a sustainable aviation minor
  • Developing experiential learning opportunities in sustainability

Operation Initiatives

Task force operations initiatives include:
  • Investigating the feasibility of adopting unleaded fuel in the training fleet
  • Exploring ways to integrate safety and efficiency in flight training operations
  • Generating ideas for improving sustainability practices in day-to-day college operations
  • Developing a web page to share information related to sustainable aviation

  • Master of Science in Aviation and Aerospace Sustainability (MSAAS): The MSAAS program within Embry-Riddle’s College of Aviation in the Worldwide Campus focuses on recent advances in science, practice and innovation to better understand, analyze and apply aerospace sustainability strategies.
  • : This guide, created for Embry-Riddle’s MSAAS program, offers links to books, databases (for locating articles and papers), journals, websites and resources related to the MSAAS program courses.
  • Advanced Air Mobility Research and Innovation Lab (AAMRIL): The Advanced Air Mobility Research and Innovation Lab within Embry-Riddle’s College of Aviation in the Daytona Beach Campus advances the safe, efficient, equitable and sustainable integration of advanced air mobility (AAM) systems into future transportation networks through interdisciplinary research, systems innovation and operational planning. AAMRIL’s focus on maturing concepts of operation addresses critical areas such as integrated airspace and traffic management, autonomy, flight safety, human factors, policy, public acceptance and infrastructure development.
  • Eagle Flight Research Center (EFRC): The state-of-the-art center within Embry-Riddle’s College of Engineering in the Daytona Beach Campus is equipped to conduct a variety of projects, including: experimental flight testing, aircraft modifications for FAA certification, design and testing of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), development and verification of high-fidelity (up to Level D) flight-data models used in engineering and training simulators, and prototype engineering solutions to advance eco-friendly alternatives in aviation.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Engineering Laboratory (SEEL): Environmental contaminants have several detrimental effects on the environment, ecosystems as well as human health. The mission of the Sustainability and Environmental Engineering Lab within Embry-Riddle’s College of Engineering in the Daytona Beach Campus is to better understand the concentrations, sources, as well as impacts of environmental contaminants in different compartments, with a focus on the atmospheric compartment, in order to devise strategies for their reduction and/or mitigation.
  • Clean Energy Systems Laboratory: The Clean Energy laboratory within Embry-Riddle’s College of Engineering in the Daytona Beach Campus is where students tackle the growing energy and water crises facing the United States and the world. Students tackle problems in sustainable transportation, sustainable buildings and sustainable water.
