Where Safety Becomes a Science
Safety and accident prevention require more than instinct — they demand professionals trained to identify, evaluate and control hazards before harm occurs. The Prescott Department of Safety Sciences prepares graduate students with the technical knowledge, skills and competencies to lead safety programs across aviation and other high-risk and high-reliability industries.
Our faculty are internationally recognized authorities in safety science and are regularly consulted by national media. The department is housed in the Robertson Aviation Safety Centers I & II, where faculty offices, classrooms and labs create an environment built for daily collaboration and applied discovery.
The Master of Science in Safety Science is recognized by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM). Graduating students can apply for the Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) credential without an exam requirement. The ASHM designation is an important step to gain Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM)certification, which can often lead to executive career opportunities.

Our program prepares professionals to protect lives, prevent accidents and lead safety culture across industries worldwide.
Accident Investigation
Human Performance
Study how people move, work and interact with their environment in the Ergonomics Lab using advanced motion-capture technology. Through hands-on research and industry partnerships, you’ll help design safer, more efficient systems that improve performance and reduce injury.
A Century of Aviation Safety
What can 100 years of aviation data teach us? Embry-Riddle researchers, led by graduate Elizabeth Amorkor Okine, analyzed more than 1,600 studies and found that human error still drives most accidents—while pointing to future solutions like AI, resilience engineering and systems-based safety approaches.
