Dr. Barsoum is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at ˛ÝÝ®ĘÓƵ (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, Florida. He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Engineering Structures from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 1996 and 1993, respectively. Dr. Barsoum has been with ERAU since January 2005.
Following his doctoral degree, Dr. Barsoum accrued over a decade of industry experience in various roles and management structures. His professional accomplishments include designing and analyzing the ground support and assembly station for the Orion Spacecraft, assessing the impact of Space Shuttle lift-off on structures at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, developing explosive-resistant structures for the Department of Energy, creating parametric CAD models for General Motors' small vehicles, approving structural reports for engine components in the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program, utilizing acoustic emission for early detection of helicopter gearbox failure for the Navy, and conducting business analysis for new software product development.
At ERAU, Dr. Barsoum served as the Program Coordinator for the Mechanical Engineering Program from 2012 to 2021. During this time, he and his colleagues significantly expanded the program within a decade. Since 2021, Dr. Barsoum has led the Mechanical Engineering Internship Program, which has become the largest internship program at ERAU.
Dr. Barsoum's research spans applied engineering and fundamental aspects, with expertise in structural health monitoring, fatigue, computational simulation methods, structural dynamics and vibration, and signal processing. Together with his Ph.D. student and industry collaborators, they were granted a patent for Non-destructive testing of composite components in 2024. Currently, Dr. Barsoum is leading an ANSYS-funded project to integrate computer modeling and simulation tools into multiple engineering disciplines within the ERAU Engineering Curriculum.
Dr. Barsoum's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Research Faculty Fellowship, Embry-Riddle Outstanding Teaching Award, UCF Department of Sponsored Research Fellowship, UCF College of Engineering Hubbard Scholarship, UCF College of Engineering McLellan Scholarship, ACI Scholarship, and Alexandria University Excellence Award.
