Beyond setting the standard in online education, Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University’s Worldwide Campus is now helping grow leaders by offering even more opportunities to join student chapters of professional organizations that foster growth and connections for distance learning students.

Among the most recent additions to the expanding list of such groups is ), the largest accredited leadership honor society in the U.S.

With a focus on high-quality career resources and leadership development, the NSLS now has 800 chapters and more than two million members nationwide who work together to “positively impact their communities and shape the future for a better world.”

Among the benefits for NSLS members are more than $400,000 in annual scholarship opportunities, an exclusive online job board, personalized letters of recommendation and the chance to network directly with leaders in a range of today’s top industries.

An Army veteran leads the way

The NSLS Worldwide Campus chapter was started by Christa Foster (’25), a five-year veteran of the U.S. Army who was an Aviation Operations Specialist during her time in the military. Christa is now pursuing a B.S. in Aeronautics with a minor in Aviation Safety, and she has already completed her minor in Management.

She began her education at Embry‑Riddle in 2021 while still serving, aiming to attend a school that could accommodate a demanding schedule while offering an immersive aviation program with a strong track record of success.

“Embry‑Riddle stood out for its in-depth degree programs and the impressive accomplishments of its alums, many of whom have positively impacted the aviation industry,” Christa said. “I knew this learning environment would provide the knowledge, resources, and connections needed to advance my career.”

Christa also said she was drawn to the university's mission and impressed by its commitment to excellence in providing a high-quality, personalized learning experience for all students, including those in online programs.

“After exploring the programs, I knew pursuing an A.S. and B.S. in Aeronautics with a minor in management and aviation safety would best fit my career goals,” she said. “Earning my A.S. in Aeronautics has already unlocked numerous opportunities for me. From the very first term, I felt confident that I had chosen the right university to launch a rewarding academic journey in aviation. Many people share this belief, often referring to Embry‑Riddle as the ‘Harvard of the Skies.’ I couldn't agree more.”

After five years as an Aviation Operations Specialist in the military, Christa Foster is excited about launching her civilian aviation career with a bachelor’s degree from Embry-Riddle.

The right group at the right time

Christa, who is serving as the chapter president and also as an intern for the NSLS, was drawn to the group for its leadership programs, student support initiatives, and networking opportunities that it offers online learners.

“As an aspiring aviation professional, I am interested in understanding the complexities of leadership and developing methods to help others discover their leadership style,” Christa said. “In an online environment, it is challenging to network with peers and learn from each other, especially when we are all spread out worldwide. So, what better way to do it than by starting a student organization dedicated to bringing together like-minded individuals committed to personal and professional growth?”

Christa, a recipient of a 2024 , is now working on the logistics to get the new chapter off the ground, including drafting a budget and bylaws and filling positions on the group’s board. She has other goals in sight, too.

“As an NSLS chapter president, I want to inspire others to realize their potential and guide them to new opportunities tailored to each student's aspirations,” she said. “It will be rewarding to share the numerous resources available, empowering students to make the most of them for continued success.”

For her part, Christa is excited about the potential of the NSLS to help her and other Worldwide Campus students grow personally and professionally.

“My goal is to create a space where students from diverse backgrounds can connect, share ideas, and learn essential leadership skills, regardless of location,” she said. “This initiative promotes collaboration and mentorship while encouraging students to take charge of their development and preparing them for success in their chosen fields.”

How can Worldwide students join NSLS or other student groups?

Becoming an NSLS member starts by Prospective members must complete the Foundations of Leadership Program, which includes Orientation, Leadership Training Day, Speaker Broadcasts, Success Networking Teams, and, finally, Induction.

Christa says each step is designed to build essential interpersonal skills and prepare students for formal induction. After that, students will have numerous opportunities to attend virtual workshops and leadership training while building their professional networks.

What other benefits does NSLS provide Worldwide students?

Christa said the NSLS Executive Board has already planned engaging events, some of which include team-building challenges, sustainability initiatives and collaborative study sessions. The Embry‑Riddle Worldwide Chapter is working to provide a platform for students to excel in an increasingly competitive global workforce and work towards personal achievement, she said.

There are additional academic benefits for NSLS members as well. Success Networking Teams motivate students to set and achieve meaningful “SMART” goals, including academic ones while enabling accountability through peer support and collaboration.

Each week, members can look forward to Motivational Monday, a dedicated time for inspiration and personal growth curated by the NSLS. During this session, successful individuals handpicked by the NSLS home office share motivational content to help students stay focused, driven, and energized throughout the week.

In addition, Speaker Broadcasts introduce members to influential leaders and industry experts throughout the year, providing valuable insights and strategies that can be applied to their academic pursuits and real-world problem-solving.

“These resources are designed to keep students engaged, motivated, and equipped with the tools they need for success,” Christa said. “Students will have the opportunity to share academic resources, effective study techniques, and valuable career advice to help them thrive in their courses.”
