For most travelers, an airport is just a stop on the way to their next destination. However, for a group of ˛ÝÝ®ĘÓƵ students, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was the destination — a place to explore, learn and see real-world applications of what it takes to keep a major airport running smoothly.

More than 40 students from the Prescott, Daytona Beach and Worldwide campuses had the opportunity to step behind the scenes at one of the country's busiest airports. The tour coordinated by Dr. Peter O’Reilly, an associate professor with Embry‑Riddle Worldwide’s Department of Management, with the support of the career staff of Prescott and Worldwide and hosted by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Assistant Aviation Director and Chief Operating Officer Sarah Demory, provided a different perspective on airport operations, security and emergency response.

Student Highlights

Embry‑Riddle Prescott Campus student Aston Shah, in the  program, noted that the experience peaked his interest in pursuing airport and security management. He was particularly drawn to sophisticated collaboration between all airport staff and departments, which ensures the seamless function of airport operations.

Aston stated, “I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes tour of Sky Harbor. It was a unique opportunity to see areas and operations that most people don’t have access to. I especially liked the operations area, where all the key personnel including security coordinators, law enforcement, efficiency coordinators, asset managers and others work together to keep the airport running smoothly."


“Witnessing how these roles interact in real-time gave me a much deeper appreciation for the complexity of airport operations. The tour was very informative, and I’d highly recommend it,” Aston said.
Students expressed that one of the day's highlights was an exclusive bus tour inside the airport grounds, offering up-close views of restricted areas most travelers never see. From observing security protocols to understanding the logistics behind airfield operations, students walked away with a greater understanding of the inner workings of airport management.

Phoenix Sky Harbor and Embry‑Riddle

The recent airport tour was just one of the ways the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is strengthening its connection with Embry‑Riddle. Beyond hosting student visits, the airport actively supports internships for Embry‑Riddle students and recently joined Embry‑Riddle’s new Real-World Video program, offering an even deeper look into aviation careers.
