Embry‑Riddle is The Place to Be

Josephine “Josie” Parker (’24, ’25, ’26) was determined to gain the education and skill set needed to thrive as a leader in the aerospace industry — a conviction that drew her to Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University. The professional opportunities, facilities and community of the Daytona Beach Campus stood out to her immediately.

“It is one of the few universities where aviation, aerospace and engineering all come together in one environment,” Josie shared. “Once I visited the campus and saw the opportunities available, it felt like the right place to challenge myself and grow.”

Her affinity for space led her to the B.S. in Astronomy and Astrophysics, while a desire for a strong technical foundation inspired her to pursue Computational Mathematics. She earned both degrees in just five years but did not stop there.

“As I progressed through my undergraduate studies, I realized I wanted to understand not just the science of space, but also how missions and systems operate in the real world,” she said. “The Space Operations program was the perfect next step because it bridges technical knowledge with industry application.”

Understanding Space Operations

The Master of Science in Space Operations was ideal for Josie because it expanded both her knowledge of and fascination with space.

“The master’s program added the operational perspective, including policy, economics, systems management, risk and the broader space ecosystem,” she said. “It helped me see how technical innovation becomes real capability.”

Though the space operations field can seem as vast as space itself, Josie found clarity through her program. And while space exploration and discovery still excite her, she can now professionally speak to and understand the complexities of space operations.

“I used to think of space primarily through the lens of exploration and technology,” she said. “Over time, I have learned that success in space also depends on logistics, business strategy, international collaboration, mission assurance and long-term sustainability. It is a much more interdisciplinary field than many people realize.”

Across the globe, space operations function as an ever-evolving intersection of interest, policy and systems, and Embry‑Riddle provided Josie with the sharp ability to understand and keep up with its developments and initiatives.

“I like that space operations is forward-looking and constantly evolving,” she shared. “My program combines innovation with practical decision making, which makes every topic feel relevant to the future.”

Unique Offerings of the M.S. in Space Operations

The Master of Science in Space Operations proved to be an industry-informed program filled with opportunities for material analysis and contributions to the field. Josie’s capstone requirement was one such opportunity that stuck with her as she reflected on her graduate education.

“I have been quantitatively comparing astronomical object detection methods for space-based imaging workflows using real datasets and statistical analysis,” Josie shared. “It combines my astronomy background, mathematics training and operational interests into one project.”

Josie took advantage of opportunities to assess and develop approaches to relevant world issues, commercial objectives and government missions. She cherished working with Embry‑Riddle's industry partners and research facilities, such as the 1-meter diameter Ritchey-Chrétien reflecting telescope.

Developing as a Lifelong Leader

Despite her technical path, Josie maintained the desire to develop key leadership skills. She planned programming centered on personal and leadership development for student-athletes through the , taught chemistry labs and more.

And it paid off — she received her program's 2026 Outstanding Student Award.

“Receiving the Outstanding Student Award for the Master of Science in Space Operations is especially meaningful because it reflects years of hard work, persistence and support from mentors, faculty, family and peers,” she shared.

Starting Off Strong

The work ethic and impactful contributions that Josie brought to the classroom set her up for a smooth transition to a pioneering aerospace company. Her extensive knowledge of the space operations industry enabled her to seek out a role that would be a perfect fit.

In February 2026, Josie started at Northrop Grumman as a software quality engineer, months before her master’s program wrapped up.

“I was interested in a role where I could contribute to mission success while continuing to grow technically,” she said. “Joining Northrop Grumman also gives me the opportunity to support meaningful work at a company with a strong legacy of innovation.”

She looks forward to taking on roles and experiences that allow her to make her mark on a field that has inspired her for years.

“I am most excited to learn from experienced professionals and contribute to systems that matter,” she said. “It is rewarding to move from the classroom into an environment where quality, precision and teamwork directly support real missions.”
