Dr. Beth Blickensderfer is a professor in the Daytona Beach Human Factors and Behavioral Neurobiology Department and Director of the Applied Cognition and Training Science research laboratory.ÌýDr. Blickensderfer holds a Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology and an M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Prior to her academic career she worked as a Research Psychologist as a civilian for the U.S. Navy.
Dr. Beth Blickensderfer has over 20 years of experience in human-machine systems research and development. Her expertise includes experimental design, cognitive task analyses, training effectiveness, human performance metricsÌýand simulation-based, human-in-the-loop testing. She has led multidisciplinary teams to address challenges in aviation, healthcareÌýand other complex socio-technical systems.Ìý
In aviation, Dr. Blickensderfer has led research on general aviation pilots' interpretation of complex weather displays, identifying obstacles to effective decision-making and developing training techniques to improve pilots' capabilities. She has also contributed to projects on integrating unmanned aircraft into national airspace and identifying hazards in live-virtual-constructive training systems for F/A-18 pilots.
In healthcare, she served as a Human Factors Specialist on a Critical Event Response Team, developing interview protocols and training for physicians and nurses, and providing human factors recommendations to improve patient safety.
Her collaborative approach involves working with domain experts to analyze systems, identify limitationsÌýand develop solutions, while understanding the unique challenges of each environment. Dr. Blickensderfer has worked with organizations such as the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare, Naval Aviation and the FAA. She has authored numerous publications and presentations.
In addition to her research expertise, Dr. Blickensderfer has a wealth of teaching and professional service experience.ÌýThis includes teaching courses at the undergraduate, master’s and Doctoral levels and being a former Human Factors Graduate Program coordinator (MS and PhD).ÌýDr. Blickensderfer’s volunteer leadership positions include being a former President of Division 21 of the American Psychological Association, a former Education Division Leader in the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society and a Co-Founder of the HFE WOMAN affinity group.
