Taylor Joy Mitchell

Overview

Dr. Taylor Joy Mitchell is an associate professor of Humanities and Composition. Dr. Mitchell currently serves as the Daytona Beach General Education Program Coordinator. Dr. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. She specializes in the scholarship of teaching and learning, including place-based stories in engineering curricula, increasing critical thinking strategies for reading and the writing process, and determining best practices for using AI to support learning. In addition to her SoTL work, Dr. Mitchell conducts interdisciplinary research on cultural icons such as Hugh Hefner, Sally Jenkins, Colin Kaepernick and Billie Holiday.

Her teaching focuses on postmodern and contemporary American culture and literature. Teaching at a predominantly STEM institution, Dr. Mitchell's interdisciplinary courses showcase the connections between science and the humanities. For instance, her honors seminars are on the stories of science, Cold War culture and eco-literature. As the advisor for organizations like Project H.O.M.E. (Hydroponic Operations for Mars Exploration), Plastic Free Initiative and Embry-Riddle's Art Club, Dr. Mitchell enjoys mentoring undergraduates.
