Dr. Mark Miller is an associate professor and also serves as program coordinator for the Master of Science in Aeronautics degree program.
A retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Miller has over 3,200 flight hours in the Sikorsky CH-53D and Bell TH-57 helicopters. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot certificate with rotorcraft-helicopter and multi-engine fixed-wing ratings and is a qualified Aviation Safety Program Manager, trained at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. During his military career, he served as a Squadron Aviation Safety Officer, helicopter instructor and classroom instructor in aviation safety, earning the designation of Naval Master Training Specialist.
Dr. Miller joined Embry-Riddle in 1998 and previously served as Director of Academics at the university’s Hawaii campus before joining the Worldwide College of Aviation in 2013. He teaches graduate-level courses in Aviation Safety Program Management, Human Factors, Accident Investigation and Research Methods.
He earned his Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California, a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University and a Master of Aeronautical Science from ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ.
Dr. Miller’s research focuses on aviation safety and human factors, particularly the impact of automation, computer information systems and artificial intelligence on the commercial flight deck. His work has also explored maintenance safety and human performance, earning him the 2023 Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics Conference Award for Best Research Publication in Safety and Human Factors.
Outside of academia, Dr. Miller is an avid surfer, canoe paddler, diver and swimmer in Hawaii. He actively supports local charities, including Toys for Tots and programs for children and individuals with disabilities. He and his wife, Vicki, have been married since 2001 and are active members of Victory Hawaii Church in Kailua.
