Dr. Dothang Truong serves as Associate Dean and Head of the School of Graduate Studies and Professor of Aviation Data Science at ݮƵ in Daytona Beach, Florida. In this leadership role, he directs graduate admissions and enrollment strategy, academic policy and assessment, curriculum innovation, and initiatives that enhance graduate student success. He oversees the nation’s first Ph.D. in Aviation and a portfolio of multidisciplinary master’s programs in aviation, unmanned systems, space operations, and safety management, while leading the development of new graduate programs. His leadership is centered on aligning graduate education with emerging industry needs and advancing the strategic growth of the School of Graduate Studies.
Dr. Truong earned his Ph.D. in Manufacturing Management and Engineering from the University of Toledo in 2004. He is an ASCM Certified Supply Chain Professional and an active member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Air Transportation Systems Technical Committee. He also contributes nationally through service on the National Science Foundation Review Panel in the Advanced Manufacturing Division and the Transportation Research Board’s Economics and Forecasting Committee.
His expertise spans aviation safety, artificial intelligence and machine learning in aviation, natural language processing, data mining, big data analytics, air transportation systems, operations research, optimization, and simulation. His teaching portfolio includes data mining, operations research, decision making, advanced statistics, structural equation modeling, logistics and supply chain management, and transportation management.
Dr. Truong has led and contributed to numerous externally funded research projects supported by the Florida Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, ASSURE, the National Science Foundation, airline partners, the FIRST program, and the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety. His work addresses critical challenges such as assessing future screening needs for Advanced Air Mobility, evaluating Safety Management System effectiveness, developing aviation safety culture frameworks, integrating unmanned aircraft systems into the National Airspace System, and applying machine learning to aviation safety data. He has also secured internal funding to develop predictive models for flight delays and small UAS violation risks. His research draws on major aviation safety databases, including ASIAS, FOQA, ASAP, LOSA, ASRS, NTSB, ASPM, and UAS sighting reports.
His scholarly impact is widely recognized. He received the Frank Sorenson Research Award in 2022 for excellence in aviation research. He is ranked number one globally in Traffic Management by ScholarGPS and is recognized as a Highly Ranked Scholar in the top 0.05 percent worldwide based on productivity, impact, and quality. Additional honors include the Blackboard Exemplary Course Award and consecutive Best Research Paper Awards from the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines.
Dr. Truong has published 74 peer-reviewed journal articles, two books, three book chapters, and 38 conference proceedings. His work has received more than 2,700 citations, with an h-index of 27 and an i10-index of 41. His recent book, “Demystifying AI: Data Science and Machine Learning Using SPSS Modeler,” reflects his commitment to translating complex analytical methods into practical tools for broader audiences while advancing the integration of AI in aviation research and practice.
